LA GOCCIA is located in Zigong, Sichuan province. Its designer expected to find the commonness between Venice in Italy and Zigong in China. Zigong was famous for salt, and it was named after two salt wells “Ziliujing” and “Gongjing”. Venice lacked arable land, so people could only receive resources from the sea. The Venice businessmen produced salt from the water in Mediterranean and then transported the salt to the inland Europe where salt was demanded, thus they made a large amount of money. Therefore salt was the commonness between Venice and Zigong. The designer used the structure of salt well in the pub to create a place where people can drink and have fun while dinning. There are various desert plants in the outside area, which creates a relaxing atmosphere. Now it has become a popular venue for young people.

Producing salt from well water is a traditional method in Zigong and it has more than two thousand years’ history, and now it is intangible culture heritage in China. There were a large number of derricks in Zigong, and there was a derrick on the top of each well. Therefore, the derrick is a symbol of local culture of Zigong. The designer chose well derrick as the theme of the space. A distinct visual feeling was generated by the way of opening a wellhead and installed the derrick upside down to the wellhead.
This project is about 400㎡, and it has a superior floor height. The designer created an attitude difference and one interlayer by taking advantage of the floor height. The interlayer not only extends the space, but also riches the guests’ dining feelings and experience. The interlayer is suspended to the ceiling by steel strips, just like a cradle hanging in the air.

The floor height of the pub is 4.8 meters. The designer was inspired by the valley landform of Zigong and used it to the curve shape of the space, and thus created rhythm sensation. The designer was also impressed by the texture of the rocks of the valley in Zigong, so he used a large amount of texture coating material. It not only restores the state of nature, creates a warm feeling for guests, but also reduces the cost.

For the purpose of obtaining delicate sensation, and to forming a visual difference against the wall, the designer utilized copper-like stainless material. Moreover, the designer used wood-like film material in order to restore the natural texture and to be environmental friendly. In order to respect the local culture in Zigong, the designer considered the traditional construction way of producing salt from well water, so he considered piling up the light-green tiles which have strong texture.

The outside area of the pub has a superior condition, so the designer enlarged the northern side and did not make a clear boundary between the inside and outside. Plus, the designer used the same material to both the inside and outside floor. The outside area can be regarded as an extension to the inside area, and thus makes an improvement of the visual effect.

Strong feelings can be attained here on the second floor, where guests can release their inner freedom. also, guests can be deeply touched by charming vision and sound of this space. Salt is irregular polyhedral crystal in the natural state, therefore the designer created a dynamic feeling to the space by installing geometry crystal sculptures to restore the natural state of salt.
