MG Space is located in Beijing 798 Art District, a famous cultural and art district in Beijing that integrates history, art, culture and so on. The intention of the project is to create a contemporary art gallery space in the historical context of the Bauhaus tradition of the 798 Art District. While the first floor creates an optimal spatial environment for the presentation of contemporary art works, the second floor needs to provide a viewing and reception space with a family atmosphere. The design establishes a conceptual connection between the Bauhaus and the European townhouses. While combining the existing building outline to create a Bauhaus-style aesthetic exterior that reflects minimalism, geometry, and a clear sense of line, the entire interior space remains the original height, and new spatial relationships are embedded into the original spatial framework. Truly present the order and proportion relationship between art and space, so as to create and stimulate a space aesthetic feeling generated by proportion and harmony.

MG Space – Mogao Art Space, the color of the facade is extracted from Chinese traditional culture and art. Dunhuang fresco, as the treasure and essence of Chinese traditional fresco art, has a strong expression of color. In the late period of Dunhuang frescoes, after the change of times and the change of history, the ethnic groups gradually merged. The painting style of the Chinese soil and the painting characteristics of the Western Regions were more integrated, and the use of colors was more mild, light and appropriate, simple and elegant. The extraction of colors also sets the tone for the creation of a “comprehensive multicultural platform” with Chinese national spirit. The exterior design needs to create clear, highly identifiable exterior conditions for the exhibition hall that can create a tone before entering the space. STUDIOHVN combines Chinese and Western culture, multi-ethnic culture and traditional art.

The art space is a two-story building with all doors and Windows facing east. To create a better interior, STUDIOHVN added and updated a wall facade above the building on the left side of the space. This area will be used for functional requirements such as entrance, front desk, stairs, storage room and bathroom. Maximize the core space of the building for art exhibitions, private reception rooms and offices. After entering from the entrance, the first thing that comes into sight is the built-in bookshelf and the reception desk, which can meet the relevant needs of customers as soon as possible. After entering the main exhibition hall, the open entrance can meet the needs of transporting large works. As you walk through the gallery, the visual scene shifts between wood and white, shade and light.

On the space processing, the exhibition hall adopts the light color paint as a whole, in order to foil the clean and transparent texture. Strive to create a pure background to highlight the central position of the artwork. Different from the conventional concrete floor of the gallery, the light-colored oak floor makes the space art and comfort coexist, bringing the visitors a home experience.

At the back of the exhibition hall on the first floor, you will enter the private reception room along the stairs. The reception area plays a more and more important role in the communication of contemporary society. The designer enlarges the function of the reception area and uses six selected furniture to meet the needs of owners and VIP customers for dinner, communication or afternoon tea.

The whole space follows a modern minimalism with a high level of detail. A contemporary installation is used as an element to brighten the space, while maximising the use of natural light to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The optimization of the outdoor balcony also forms an open courtyard landscape that communicates with the surrounding environment. The interior and exterior are connected and the scenery is easily changed by steps, and finally the harmony between the landscape, the building and the interior is achieved.
