Wenzhou-Kean University is a friendly province state cooperation project between Zhejiang Province and New Jersey. It is a Sino US cooperative University with independent legal personality and teachers from Kean University. The campus is located in Li’ao street, Ouhai District, Wenzhou, surrounded by natural mountains in the north and West, with beautiful scenery and pleasant environment. Different from the “quick completion” of the new campus of domestic colleges and universities in recent years, the enrollment of Wenzhou-Kean university has increased orderly year by year by about 1300 since it opened in 2014. The campus architecture is also gradually promoted according to the needs of professional development, forming a campus architectural style with different styles and characteristics.

The main axis of the campus is the north of the campus, which is opposite to the main axis of the campus. The total land area is 28757 m2, the total construction area is 15992 m2, and there are five floors above the ground, including two independent colleges, the school of architecture and the school of design.

The school of architecture and design of Wenzhou-Kean university is named after the late famous architect Michael Graves and focuses on building it from the perspective of globalization; The building is located in the center of the campus directly opposite the main entrance on the south side. It can be seen that the school of architecture and design plays a leading role in the campus, and its importance has exceeded that of the library on the north side.

From the beginning, the design examines the design of Michael Graves College from the scope of the overall campus, and makes it into the “urban living room” of the campus to serve all teachers and students, not just the College of architecture and design; Therefore, the communication and sharing of the public space inside the building has become the focus of the design. How to serve the teachers and students of the whole school on the premise of meeting the daily use functions of the two colleges is the starting point of the design idea.

Following the teaching curriculum and practice process of the design discipline itself, design education is a continuous cycle of research, exploration and evaluation – students or independent or team work, and then review and evaluate the learning results. The metaphor of “micro community” is used to contain and enrich this process, and Michael Graves College is regarded as a small “community”. By implanting the five storey atrium space in the middle of the building as the community center, the fishbone shaped plane layout extends the public space from the atrium to all areas of the building to form a complete shared space network.

As the “city living room” of the whole campus, the entrance atrium is open to all teachers and students. The sightseeing elevator and hanging stairs provide convenient transportation and free access to classrooms and activity places; The three storey high large steps not only meet the daily vertical traffic of a large number of people, but also serve as an open “multi-functional hall” for public lectures and reports of colleges and schools, which can accommodate 800 people for activities at the same time. The glass skylight at the top introduces soft and bright natural light into the room through the filtration of aluminum square. The axis of the main entrance is continued through the transparent glass curtain wall at the north and south ends to become a visual corridor.

New style alley
The surrounding of the building is the core green landscape of the campus, which is relatively open. Learn from the scale of Chinese traditional alley space to create a pleasant indoor and outdoor communication space. A “alley” space with a width of 6 m and a height of 10 m is formed between the two-story strip buildings. The horizontal texture of the parallel outer wall of black granite extends to the site and landscape design of the whole plot. The shared communication space extends from indoor to outdoor. Compared with the relatively heavy building volume of the lower two floors, the upper two floors are made of pure white aluminum plate, The light-weight and high-strength white UHPC is used as the vertical and outward sunshade in the east-west direction to form a suspended light strip volume. Facing the main entrance of the south campus, the six large colonnades that fall vertically from the top floor strengthen the building volume and deal with the visual image of the main entrance.

According to the publicity of the building function space, it is divided from bottom to top. The first and second floors are the public classrooms, laboratories, computer classrooms and administrative offices shared by two colleges, the third floor is the shared map evaluation space, and the fourth and fifth floors are two long shapes at an angle, which can obtain a broader landscape vision through the angle open to the north. These two floors are mainly architectural and design classrooms – workshops, which are mainly open and changeable spaces, while enclosing and limiting the atrium space.

The building is located in the core green space of the campus, which itself is an integral part of the landscape of the North-South main axis of the campus. The integrated design of landscape and architecture “hides” the building in the overall landscape and becomes the connecting hub between the north-south and east-west of the campus. The North-South teachers and students pass through the central entrance Atrium – urban living room, closely connecting the central green space in the South and the landscape lake in the north; The east-west direction is directly connected through three “Alleys”, and the indoor and outdoor are seamlessly connected; Through the large outdoor steps at the North-South entrance, you can directly reach the landscape roof of the alley on the second floor, and pass through the whole building through the outside.

It has been nearly a year since the project was officially launched, and I have been wondering whether the original design concept can be realized. Perhaps the most persuasive sentence recently circulated between teachers and students in Wenzhou-Kean University – one thing that must be done in Wenzhou-Kean University: go to Ge Hekai Hall at noon to see the traces of sunshine.
